Liverpool close to Javier Mascherano deal (15 Feb 2008 11:40 GMT)
Rafael Benitez has insisted that Liverpool are close to signing Javier Mascherano permanently, despite fresh reports linking the Argentina midfielder with a move elsewhere.
Mascherano whose contract is actually owned by the Media Sports Investment consortium was due to complete an £18.6 million move from West Ham United last week. But with the situation still unresolved, Spanish newspapers have claimed the player has been offered to Barcelona.
Benitez does not need another distraction with rumours resurfacing about a fresh takeover of the club by Dubai International Capital, and the continuing possibility of legal action against a Sunday newspaper.
"I am only going to concentrate on the football," Benitez said. "I have got a team to prepare for this weekend's FA Cup game against Barnsley, and that is what I am thinking about."
