Batistuta could become Boca's new coach (22 Dec 2007 10:21 GMT)

According to reports from the Argentine press Gabriel Batistuta could become the new coach of Boca Juniors.

Batistuta is one of the main candidates to take over the position left by Miguel Angel Russo.

However, the Argentine football legend feels that it wasn't the right decision for Russo to leave the club at this particular moment.

"Russo shouldn't have left; a coach who wins the Copa Libertadores just a few months ago, and lost the Club World Cup final against Milan, who aren't just another team. He should have stayed at Boca," he stated.

But the former striker affirmed to Radio Belgrano's program "La vuelta olimpica" that he hasn't been approached by Boca.

"No-body has called me," he said.

But, he admitted that Boca's new president, Pedro Pompilio, has been interested in him for a while now.

"When I was in Germany (for the 2006 World Cup) Pompilio told me that he would like it if I would coach the team," he declared.

"For me to coach Boca would be a dream; I think I'm prepared for the responsibility, because for a number of years now I have the certificate that allows me to be a coach," he said.

Batistuta, who is 38 years of age, has been living in Perth, Western Australia, but has returned to Argentina and is now building a house in the city of his birth, Reconquista.

Other possible candidates to occupy the Boca coaching vacancy include, Carlos Bianchi, Jorge Ribolzi, and Argentina's greatest footballer of all time, Diego Armando Maradona.
