Veron rejects move to MLS (16 Dec 2007 15:12 GMT)
Argentine star Juan Sebastion Veron's rumored move to Major League Soccer's D.C. United came to an end Friday when the 32-year-old was quoted in the Argentinean media saying he was not interested.
"(United offered) a lot of money; maybe I would advise a kid to go," he told Argentine reporters. "But in a situation like mine it is better to live for the things that give you happiness."
Among Veron's reasons to stay at his current and hometown club, Estudiantes, was its qualification for the Copa Libertadores.
"My teammates told me: 'We fought for a year to play in the Copa Libertadores and we have to stay together,'" he said.
The move comes as a slap in the face to United fans as it had been reported that the deal to bring Veron to the states was close to being finalized.
"I'm staying because of the fans and my teammates," Veron said. "I couldn't say goodbye."
