Kempes hired as Panama coach (2 Jan 2006 04:01 GMT)
Former Argentina strike ace Mario Kempes is set to succeed Panama national team manager Jose Hernandez.
It will be the biggest job the 1978 world champion has taken, with mild experience coming in minor leagues such as Bolivia, Indonesia and Venezuela.
"It's one of life's coincidences," he told Argentine radio. "A friend of mine got to know the president of the Panamanian federation, who called me to ask about taking over the team and we negotiated an agreement."
Panama enjoyed some success under Hernandez, who guided Los Caneleros to the CONCACAF World Cup qualifying hexagonal and the 2006 Gold Cup final.
