Mascherano hints at exit (2 Jan 2007 20:32 GMT)

Javier Mascherano says that he is prepared to leave West Ham United and pursue success elsewhere as he feels his career is currently on hold.

Mascherano has played just five times for the Hammers since his much-heralded summer capture along with fellow Argentine Carlos Tevez and it seems his stay at the club could be set for a premature end.

"It is normal that if I am not in the team at West Ham then I will have to leave to continue my career elsewhere," Mascherano said. "At my age I cannot afford to let my career stay on hold. I came to England to succeed but I have not had the necessary opportunities to succeed."

The 22-year-old international has been linked with a move to Italian giants Juventus in recent weeks. Although Juve are in the second division of Italian football following match fixing charges it would still be a big move for Mascherano who has failed to settle since his move to Upton Park.

While Alan Curbishley may want to cash in on Mascherano to help fund transfer reinforcements the midfielder does not think that Tevez will be following him out the door.

"I don't think Tevez will leave because some days ago he said to everyone that for him the word 'fail' did not exist," he said.
