Triple win for Argentina over Brazil in Sudamericana (12 Oct 2006 16:11 GMT)

Argentine teams Lanus, Gimnasia-La Plata and San Lorenzo all knocked out Brazilian opponents to reach the Copa Sudamericana quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Lanus overcame Corinthians, winning the second leg 4-2 at home, as visiting coach Emerson Leao returned to the stadium where he was injured in a brawl nine years ago.

Gimnasia-La Plata beat Fluminense 2-0 at home for a 3-1 aggregate win and San Lorenzo lost 1-0 away to Santos but comfortably went through 3-1 on aggregate.

Leao, coach of Atletico Mineiro at the time, suffered broken teeth and a black eye on a previous visit to Lanus in 1997 after he was caught in a brawl following the Copa Conmebol final.

This time it was his pride which suffered as Corinthians, held 0-0 at home in the first leg, fell apart despite taking a first-minute lead when Nadson headed home in Buenos Aires.

Mauricio Romero scrambled the equaliser in the 15th minute with Corinthians claiming offside and Maxi Velazquez took advantage of slack marking to put Lanus ahead two minutes later.

Marcos Aguirre made it 3-1 in the 35th minute after the Corinthians defence had blocked two previous shots.

Corinthians, who are fighting relegation in the Brazilian championship, pulled one back through Marinho in the 55th minute.

But a blunder by midfielder Magrao, who tried to play keep-up on the edge of his own penalty area and lost control of the ball, gifted Rodrigo Archubi a fourth for Lanus.

Gimnasia went ahead in La Plata when Fluminense striker Tuta headed into his own goal in first-half injury-time.

Santiago Silva added the second on the break in the 66th minute and was promptly sent off for a second bookable offence when he took his shirt off in the celebration.

Fluminense had striker Lenny dismissed in the 75th minute.

In Santos, Wellington Paulista scored with a 37th-minute header to give Pele's former club a 1-0 win over San Lorenzo but they rarely looked like wiping out the three-goal deficit against Oscar Ruggeri's team.

Lanus and San Lorenzo face Mexican sides Pachuca and Toluca respectively in the quarter-finals, while Gimnasia take on Chilean champions Colo Colo.

Brazil's hopes now lie entirely with Atletico Paranaense, who are at home to River Plate on Thursday with a 1-0 lead from the first leg.
