Sorin: We played better than many accept (15 Jun 2006 20:42 GMT)
Argentina captain Juan Pablo Sorín has flatly rejected the criticisms that some have levelled against Albicelestes after a game of two halves in which Argentina shone in the first half and handed the initiative to the African side in the second.
"We played exactly the game we needed to play against the Ivory Coast. Many people are putting our performance down because of the supposed low quality of the rival, but the Ivory Coast were a really tough team to beat", said Sorín. "It was a tough way to start off a World Cup but we left Hamburg with the result that we wanted: a victory. Moreover, we played a lot better than some people are willing to accept. We were expecting a complicated fixture and we weren't wrong - they're a tough nut to crack."
Sorin also thanked the fans that had supported Argentina.
"What our fans did in Hamburg was really moving. We knew that our supporters weren't going to let us down but the way they behaved was simply spectacular", he added.
