Messi not the new Maradona according to Argentina chief (2 Apr 2006 17:48 GMT)
Argentina cannot rely on young star forward Lionel Messi to inspire them to World Cup glory as Diego Maradona did in 1986 according to Argentinian Football Federation president Julio Grondona.
"We cannot depend on Messi like we did at that time depend on Maradona. They are two different things," said Grondona trying to deflect mounting pressure from the Barcelona striker.
Maradona was not only the captain but also the inspiration behind Argentina reaching successive World Cup finals in 1986 and 1990.
Messi, 18, has been in startling form in Barcelona over the last few months, leading some to start drawing comparisons with Maradona.
"There are seven games and one month (if Argentina reach the final) and we must be in good condition from the first match, not just from the quarter-finals," added Grondona.
